Title:

From Body Area Networks (BAN) to SmartBAN

Abstract:

As the world’s population ages, the need for solutions that help people live longer at home and with a better quality of life increases. Body Area Networks (BAN) are attracting growing attention as a solution for supporting services in medical, healthcare and other fields employing wearable sensor devices requiring low power, short range wireless communication.

At the same time, the Internet of Things (IoT) is rapidly emerging. The number of connected devices is growing exponentially and expected to reach in the 10s of billions by 2020. More and more, our devices are connected, including personal and body sensor devices, opening the door for new opportunities and also raising new challenges.

Solutions may be used at home, in the hospital or on the move 24/7. Devices may be wearable or implantable. BANs may interact with other BANs or IoT devices in our environment. We may form user communities for sharing data and collaborating. At the same time, our BAN devices must co-exist with a multitude of devices in the IoT. Information exchange must be dependable, secure and trusted. Interoperability and coexistence must be ensured across heterogeneous networks. New demands are placed on standards

The focus of this presentation is on BAN and Healthy IoT. We will examine the status today, applications and services, present standards and solutions, issues and limitations of BAN today towards ETSI SmartBAN and beyond.
